Garage door springs play a crucial role in the operation of a garage door. A couple of different types of garage door springs are responsible for counterbalancing the door’s weight, making it easier to open and close manually or with the assistance of a garage door opener.
Types of Garage Door Springs
Typically, garage doors use either extension springs or torsion springs.
- Torsion Springs: These springs are mounted horizontally above the door opening, parallel to the header. Torsion springs twist and coil to store mechanical energy. When the door is closed, the springs are under tension. As the door is opened, the stored energy is released, assisting in the lifting process. Torsion springs are typically stronger and more durable than extension springs.
- Extension Springs: These are parallel to the horizontal tracks on either side of the door. They stretch and contract as the door opens and closes. Extension springs store and release energy to help lift the door. They are usually mounted with safety cables to prevent them from becoming projectiles if they break.
- Internal Springs: These work on the same principle as Torsion Springs but are placed inside a metal tube. These are most commonly installed on Wayne Dalton Garage Doors and are common in newly constructed homes in and around Southern Utah. When these types of springs break, replacing the entire mechanism with a standard external spring is recommended, as seen in the images below.

Both types of springs are designed to bear the garage door’s weight and reduce the effort required to operate it. The spring system is calibrated to balance the importance of the door, ensuring smooth and controlled movement during opening and closing.
Customer Love
“Seth came the same day and replaced both the broken springs on my garage door. Everything is working great now. He was friendly and did a great job. Price was reasonable.”
~ Cindy R.
It’s important to note that garage door springs are under high tension and can be dangerous to work with. If you are not experienced with garage door repairs, hiring a professional technician for any spring-related maintenance or replacements is recommended to avoid injury.
